Dr Miller was born in Washington, DC, and grew up in Silver Spring, MD. He attended college first at the University of Miami, then at the University of Maryland, where he had a broad range of studies, including Art, Art History, and Zoology. It was while helping a college roommate study for the dental entrance exam that he decided dentistry looked like “fun”. He took the entrance exam without any preparation himself and did well enough that he was persuaded to apply to dental school. Dr Miller attended the University of Maryland Dental School, which is where he fell in love with the artistic part of the training and realized dentistry was the fusion of his interests in art and science.
Dr Miller started a private practice in the Rockville area in 1978 with the mission of achieving optimal dental health for each of his patients by providing individualized treatment that fosters ongoing patient relationships. His treatment approach is conservative and focused on the prevention of dental problems with an acute awareness of the connection between oral and overall health.
In 2000, Dr Miller earned his Fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry. Driven by a desire to constantly learn and improve, he regularly takes continuing education courses, both in-person and online, attends multiple conferences every year, subscribes to dental podcasts, and follows the latest dental journals. His on-going education allows him to utilize the most modern procedures and technology in his practice.
Dr Miller is a former member of the Dean’s Faculty of University of MD, and he serves on the Southern Maryland Dental Society Peer Review Committee. Several times a year he volunteers at Mission of Mercy Dental Clinics, where patients who otherwise do not have access to regular dental care are able to receive treatment. Dr Miller provides pro bono dental services to refugees who have recently been resettled in the DC area and through Maryland Foundation of Dentistry for the Handicapped.
Joan got her start in dentistry at age 16 working for her father, Dr Philip Miller, who had a dental practice in Washington, DC. She worked holidays and summers as his chairside assistant; then, after completing her dental hygiene education at Baltimore Community College, she worked as his hygienist for 15 years.
Joan joined Dr Miller’s practice in 1991 with the mutual goal of providing the best preventive dental care by listening to patients and supplying them with the knowledge they need to achieve optimal oral health. Joan’s commitment to continuing education allows her to share the most current information with her patients. She takes special interest in learning about how nutrition and diet relate to oral and systemic health. Joan has also participated in P.A.N.D.A. courses that teach dental professionals to recognize and prevent abuse and neglect, a cause she feels passionately about.
Joan has volunteered with the Literacy Counsel and at the Children’s Inn at NIH, and she is a Court Appointed Special Advocate.
Suanne, born in Buffalo and raised in Rochester, NY, considered medical school and nursing before her own dental hygienist inspired her to enter the dental field. She took part in a mentoring program where she shadowed dental professionals in general and specialty practices and then went on to study at Monroe Community College/Eastman Dental in Rochester, NY, where she graduated with distinction.
As a hygienist, Suanne is concerned with providing patients superior dental care in a friendly and stress-free environment. She is always cognizant that providing the best care means educating patients on ways to improve their own oral health, and that sometimes it also requires going beyond their obvious dental needs.
Outside her work as a hygienist, Suanne pursues her devotion to caring for others as both an Ordained Deacon and a Wellness Educator.
Yi Ting, originally from Taiwan, has been working side-by-side with Dr Miller since 2015. After studying Business and Social Sciences at Feng Chia University in Taiwan, with time as an international exchange student at University of Minnesota, her dentist was the one who encouraged her to attend a dental assisting program, and she has never regretted it.
As a dental assistant, Yi Ting has to be a jack-of-many trades, including assisting the doctor in procedures, taking X-rays, disinfecting and sterilizing equipment, and providing operational and administrative support wherever needed. But, the aspect of Yi Ting’s role patient’s will appreciate the most is the responsibility she takes in making them comfortable during their visits.
Ana was born in El Salvador and moved to the US in 1993, where she attended Central High School in Capitol Heights, MD, Prince George’s Community College, and Montgomery College. She worked for Dr Peter Neff and Dr Chris Loukaitis, both of Washington, DC, before joining Dr Miller’s practice in 2010. Ana is thrilled to be a part of an outstanding team providing outstanding dental care. Her role in the office is to provide the administrative support to the doctor and his staff that allows operations to run smoothly and to find the most effective ways to accommodate patient needs. Patients will immediately recognize Ana’s friendly demeanor--she is their first interaction with the practice, whether on the phone or coming in for a visit.
Shelley grew up in Chevy Chase, MD. She is a BCC alum and received her BA in psychology from the University of MD. After briefly working with governmental agencies, she has spent her career overseeing the business aspects of Dr Miller’s practice, including scheduling, billing and insurance claims, record keeping, and accounting. With the increasing role of technology, she also spends time determining and finding solutions to hardware and software needs, then ensuring they function to allow the practice to run smoothly. Shelley takes pride in working with patients to ensure they feel at ease from their very first appointment, and the long-lasting relationships she builds with them are the part of her job she finds most rewarding. In addition to her work at the practice, Shelley uses her accounting knowledge to prepare tax returns for elderly and low-income Montgomery County residents at no-charge through a county run program and volunteers several times a year with Dr Miller at Mission of Mercy Dental Clinics.
